Lodge 40 was named the Joseph J. Haggerty Memorial Lodge in his honor. Mr. Haggerty was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Haggerty
and was born November 22, 1916 in Pittston PA. Mr. Haggerty enlisted in the PSP August 1, 1940 stationed at the Bethlehem
barracks. He obtained leave and joined the USMC on December 12, 1942 and served as a drill instructor at Parris Island SC
for 2 years before embarking for overseas duty in the Pacific Theatre of Operations with Company C 32nd replacement unit.
He was advanced to the rank of Marine Sergeant.
Sgt. Haggerty's unit
participated in the invasion of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on Easter Sunday 1945. He was killed by enemy gunfire on May 14 1945
while laying out markers on a hill site to guide US support aircraft. Men in his platoon reported Sgt. Haggerty was killed
performing a duty he could have delegated but chose to undertake the risk himself. He was 28 years old.
Sgt. Haggerty was survived by his widowed mother Mrs.Bridget Haggerty; sister, Mrs. Kathyrn Cannon;
and brother Patrick, who at the time of Joseph's death was serving with a US Army field artillery battalion then engaged in
the critical Battle of the Bulge.
